Navigating The Ban on Single-Use Plastics

Last January, the government announced bans and restrictions on different single-use plastic items in a bid to improve the sustainability of our environment. These rules came into effect on 1st October 2023 as part of the effort to eliminate single-use plastics and meet the goal of eliminating all "avoidable plastic waste" by 2042.

Scientists warn that there are currently over 171 trillion pieces of plastic floating in the world's oceans, and this number could nearly triple by 2040 if we don't act now.

What’s included in the single-use plastic ban?

  • The ban includes cutlery, polystyrene cups and food containers, and balloon sticks, covering all types of single-use plastics, including those labelled biodegradable, compostable, or recycled.
  • The ban affects sales both online and in stores. Retailers cannot supply these items even if they have existing stock.
  • Whilst single-use plastic plates, trays, and bowls face restrictions, takeaways will still be able to use the types of containers, trays and wraps if they are pre-filled or filled at the point of sale.
  • Shelf-ready, pre-packaged food items are also excluded from the rules. However, producers are encouraged to use recyclable packaging.
  • While polystyrene is banned, retailers can still provide polystyrene lids for coffee cups as long as the cups themselves are not made from polystyrene.

Food packaging

Roughly five million tonnes of plastic is used annually in the UK, with nearly half attributed to packaging. Whilst shelf-ready pre-packaged food items are exempt from the single-use plastic ban, producers are urged to opt for recyclable packaging solutions.

Food packaging is quite tricky. It should not only attract consumers with it look and appeal but also keep the integrity of the product inside, a task that is often conveniently achieved with the use of plastic.

Some product ranges rise to the occasion, offering customers high-quality products that also benefit the planet.

With increasing consumer demand for eco-friendly products, sustainability-focused businesses thrive, forming new partnerships and sparking meaningful conversations beyond the checkout aisle.
